April 11, 2008 was one of the best days of my life.
For over a week, I had been looking forward to going to my friend Molly's birthday party, which took place yesterday. Being invited was something in itself, but actually being there was the fun part. I asked my mum if I could ride home with Molly instead of having to find out how to get there on our own. Matt rode home with Molly as well, so it was Molly, Matt and myself. The funny part was though, is that when I got in the car and shut the door, her mum started driving and left Matt behind. I was like looking back and laughing and Molly finally told her mum to stop. He finally ended up getting in the car.
As we drove, I tried my best to pay attention to where we were going because they live out in the middle of nowhere. I got a general idea, so I was pleased with myself. Molly's mum talked our ears off and eventually, I kind of sparked conversation with Matt while her mum was talking until we got to her house. The first thing I noticed was her sister's brown Chow-Chow, Bobo, running through the yard. That thing, even though Molly hates it, is one of the cutest dogs I have ever seen in my life. It runs kind of lop-sided and it was really fluffy and had one of those happy expressions all the time. I was OK with Bobo. Heindrik, her German Shepherd came running up and I was kind of wary. I'm a fan of huge dogs and everything, but I haven't had very pleasant experiences when it came to German Shepherds. I was kind of nervous around him, but after a while, I got really used to him and he seemed to like me.
Matt, Molly and I went into her house, which, I might add, is one of the prettiest houses I've seen in a long time. It's a really dark brown colour and really old. I have a thing for old houses, so I was going insane. Her sister's room is just kick-ass. It's all dark and gloomy with posters all over the walls. While Molly's room was all bright and cheerful. Molly and I went into her room and the first thing she did was take her rat, Ailbhe, and put it on me. I'm not one for rodents and I was kind of freaked out, but I have to say... Ailbhe is an exception. That's the only rat that I have ever called adorable, the only rat that I've ever liked. I was kind of shocked. Matt fell in love with her and we were both sitting in the floor feeding her and such. As soon as I stood up, I had this really soft, fluffy animal in my face. It was a chinchilla that Molly had brought from another room. I held it for a while. It was adorable. It was nocturnal, though, so it was kind of out of it. All three of us fooled around for a while, threw things at each other and Matt nearly broke my back trying to flip me over Molly's bed frame. It kind of went over his head that I was a head shorter than him. (I also ended up being the shortest person at the party.) It was pretty funny. After a few phone calls, we waited for people to arrive. The first person to arrive was Ashley, Matt's girlfriend. We all hung out in Molly's room and we kept getting onto them about snogging or having sex or whatever. It was really funny. Chelsea arrived next. Caroline and Elizabeth never came. Elizabeth couldn't come and Caroline was sick. Around this time, we were all running around and we were all hyper as hell. All five of us went outside (this was when I started to relax around Hein) because Molly wanted to show us her "three-headed chicken". Hein is a herd-dog, so he was running around the cage barking at the chicken as if it wasn't already in the cage. We were all going crazy, laughing, spitting out Josh jokes and everything else.
After that, we all went out on the back porch. Somehow an ice fight started. Matt and Molly were the main ice-throwers and I got unfairly whacked a few times with ice cubes and was stinging for the longest time. We were all crazy hyper and out of it by now. Molly decided then that we were going to play hide-and-seek. Ashley was the counter. Chelsea and Molly took off in one direction, while Matt and I took off in the other direction. We walked around for a while until we found Molly and Chelsea in the car. Molly wasn't aware that we could see them and she was waving and flailing her arms. Ashley ended up finding us and then Molly went to count. Chelsea, Matt, Ashley and I ran up her long-ass driveway towards the road. Molly found us after a couple of minutes and we all hung out up around the road. This is when we decided to play Charades and we ended up cracking so many jokes and going crazy.
I forgot who said it, but someone stated that if people stand on one end of the road and other people on the other side of the road and pretend to pull something that the car would slow down, so we tried it. Needless to say, it didn't work. So we sat and lied around in the road until we got to talking about hardcore dancing. Molly talked about how she hardcore danced with Thomas (her sister's boyfriend) and got punched and that it wasn't fun. Matt then imitated it and somehow we decided to hold hands and skip/run down the road. Eventually, we broke apart and began doing our own little things. I was slowing down and Molly started "hardcore dance-running" down the road. We eventually got to the bridge. Molly, Ashley and Matt went down the side of the bank into the creek. Chelsea and I didn't go. I hung out around the edge with Bobo and Hein, screaming and carrying on. Then I found a rock and tried to throw it to where it would hit the water next to them, but not actually hit them. The last one hit the water, which splashed up and hit Ashley in the eye. Molly came running up from the creek and started screaming about a spider being on her neck. Then she started screaming and chasing Chelsea and I back up the road. We eventually stopped and started walking back up towards her house, with Hein right behind us. We left Matt and Ashley in the creek and they got onto the road when we were about half-way up it.
The five of us just hung out in her kitchen. Then we went into Molly's room and took pictures of all of us as a group. Hannah came in a while later and told us that they were cutting the cake. After a few minutes of taking pictures, we went into the kitchen to cut the cake. It was a cheesecake, which I'd never seen used in place of a birthday cake. It was really good, though. Matt started singing happy birthday and I half-heartedly sang along with him, but we were the only two singing and then we got ice cream. I think we were the only two that ate it. Ashley had to leave early, so we were rushing to get down to where the bonfire was going to be, which was a huge-ass field just outside of Molly's back yard. We all walked down there. Molly was like chanting and then I started reciting Pax Deorum in this creepy-ass voice and I think I scared Chelsea. We got the fire started and it was growing for a while. It was getting darker too. Our intention was to roast marshmallows and hot dogs, but it turned out so different than that.
Ashley had to leave, so Chelsea and Molly went up to the house with her, leaving Matt and I at the fire. We followed them for a little ways and Matt threw marshmallows at them. They sneaked around and Molly got a cape and the pig mask from Saw and went tearing through there screaming and waving her arms. It didn't really scare me, I think I was too busy laughing. We ended up burning the cape and random people were putting on the mask and running around. It had started raining sometime earlier, so the fire wasn't going to be that powerful and we had a whole bag of marshmallows. So, you know what we did? In the rain, we ran around the bonfire and through the field having a marshmallow war. That was fun as hell. Since it was dark, there were "OW!"s and "WHO THREW THAT?!"s flying everywhere. And it was satisfying too, because when you hit someone with the marshmallow, you could hear the pop when it hit. People were either having conversations or running around throwing marshmallows or waving flaming sticks.
It was thundering and it started lightning. It was heat-lightning through. There were few strikes and we all decided to go back inside. We were still hitting other people with marshmallows when we went up to the house. Laura, Hannah and Thomas went into Hannah's room and played Guitar Hero. Matt, Chelsea, Molly and I sat on the bench on her back porch and listened to it rain (it has a tin roof) and watched the lightning light everything up. I've never been fond of thunderstorms, but watching it was so much fun. We sat out there for about half an hour or so and then we went inside. Mum came around eleven. I went outside and hugged Molly, Chelsea and Laura, shook hands with Matt, Chelsea, Molly and Laura because they all seemed to want a handshake. Between the five of us, there was no favouritism, no drama and nothing bad at all. It was a first for me and a group of people, so I was happy. I pet Bobo and got in the Maxima to leave. Around fifteen minutes down the road, I realised I'd forgotten my backpack and had to turn around and go back, where I once again told everyone (except for Matt, he'd left) goodbye for the last time and headed home.
I'll never forget this. (: Thank you guys for everything. P.S. I have never felt so loved my so many people at once. Every smile shot towards me, I felt the sincerity. I felt the honesty behind every I love you, I felt the love in every glance I got and every laugh that I received made me feel good. I've never been in a room with more than three people and knew for certain that everyone wasn't lying when they told me they loved me or that they liked me. I could be myself, I didn't have to worry about having doubts or wondering in my mind how stupid I might look to them. I could be myself, I didn't have to worry about having doubts or wondering in my mind how stupid I might look to them. I was just Colby, I could just be Colby, and that is all I ever want to be. This night meant so much to me and I can't thank you enough for making it happen.
